Pants and Tie- Washing Machine
I am from Toronto. I like Toronto. It would make sense, then, that I keep track of what’s going on music-wise in Toronto. This led me to Pants and Tie. A friend saw them a little while ago and described them as “electro soul and good guitar”. I was a little worried but
it turns out it’s right up my alley. Maybe it’s up yours too!
Janelle Monae- Sincerely Jane
Every once in awhile, P Diddy or Sean Combs or Puffy or whatever he’s calling himself now signs somebody actually interesting. Janelle Monae is that artist. Think Lady
Prince/A Strange Fascination with Androids…
Ben Gibbard- Complicated (Avril Lavigne)
This song means something to me today. It probably means nothing to you. That’s okay.
Bob Dylan- You’ll Go (Ronson Remix)
We’re on the fence about this one. I, boy-half, like this Dylan remix but girl-half is not a fan. She’s a little more of a traditionalist and does not take remixed lightly. I quote, “If it’s a good song and the remix does not make it exponentially better, I am not interested”. Geez.
Chris Whitley and Jeff Lang- Changing of the Guard
Chris Whitley was an amazing guitarist who passed away in 2005. This song is off of Dislocation Blues, a collaborative record he made with Jeff Lang and was released about a year or so after his death. It features Chris singing on a handful of songs and some of the best blues-tinged guitar work I’ve heard in awhile.
Coldplay feat. Jay-z- Lost
Please note: I am not a huge Coldplay fan. I like the Blue Room EP when I was in high school (and will argue its virtues to anyone with no shame) but post-Parachutes, I am less thrilled. However, add Jay-z to the latest Coldplay single and I’m won over. I think you will be too! Also, please enjoy this photo of Jay-Z in his grandma hipster glasses.
Tom Waits- Rains on Me
Tom Waits’ Orphans is such a good record. Such a good record. I don’t really think I need to say anything else about it.
